- **Teleprompter**: A screen that shows a script next to or in front of a camera lens so a presenter can read while looking at the viewer. It can be a phone in a glass rig, a monitor at the front of a stage, or a window right under a webcam. [The free browser teleprompter →](https://scrollcue.com/)
- **Beam-splitter glass**: Partly mirrored glass mounted at 45° in front of a camera. The camera sees through it while the presenter sees the screen's reflection, so text sits directly over the lens. [DIY teleprompter glass →](https://scrollcue.com/blog/diy-teleprompter-glass-guide)
- **70/30 glass**: Beam-splitter glass that passes about 70% of light to the camera and reflects about 30% toward the presenter. It gives a single sharp reflection and costs roughly half a stop of exposure. [Glass types and sizes →](https://scrollcue.com/blog/diy-teleprompter-glass-guide)
- **Mirror mode**: A setting that flips the text horizontally so it reads the right way round after reflecting off teleprompter glass. [Hardware teleprompters →](https://scrollcue.com/hardware)
- **Cue line**: A fixed marker near the top of the prompter that shows which line to read. Keeping it close to the lens keeps your eyes close to the camera. [Setup guides →](https://scrollcue.com/setup)
- **Gaze angle**: The angle between where you look and the camera lens. Under about 2° viewers read it as eye contact; reading 2 cm below the lens from 65 cm away gives about 1.8°. [Gaze angle table →](https://scrollcue.com/#eye-contact)
- **Lens gap**: The distance between the camera lens and the line of script you are reading. The smaller the lens gap compared with how far you sit from the camera, the smaller your gaze angle and the more it looks like eye contact. [Teleprompter numbers →](https://scrollcue.com/teleprompter-numbers)
- **1-in-30 rule**: ScrollCue's rule of thumb for eye contact: keep the lens gap under one thirtieth of your distance from the camera. That holds the gaze angle under about 2° (atan of 1/30 is 1.9°): about 2 cm at 65 cm, 1.3 cm for a phone at 40 cm, 10 cm from 3 m. [Teleprompter numbers →](https://scrollcue.com/teleprompter-numbers)
- **One-screen rule**: Put the script on the same screen as the camera you look into, never on a screen beside it. A side monitor 40 cm away, read from 65 cm, is a gaze angle of about 31.6°, around 18 times the angle of a script 2 cm under the webcam. - **Eyeline**: The direction a presenter's eyes point on camera. A good eyeline points into or just beside the lens, which is why the script should sit as close to the camera as possible. [MacBook teleprompter →](https://scrollcue.com/blog/teleprompter-for-macbook)
- **Confidence monitor**: A screen facing the speaker, usually at the front of a stage or platform, that shows the script, notes or slides where the audience cannot see them. [Church teleprompter setup →](https://scrollcue.com/blog/church-teleprompter-setup-guide)
- **Scroll speed**: How fast the script moves. ScrollCue measures it in pixels per second (10 to 240 px/s). Conversational delivery is usually around 130 to 160 words per minute; sermons are often slower. [Setup guides →](https://scrollcue.com/setup)
- **Voice follow**: A prompter mode that listens to you and scrolls to match your speech, holding its place when you pause or paraphrase. In ScrollCue it runs on your device and is part of Pro. [Voice prompter →](https://scrollcue.com/)
- **Teleprompter remote**: A way to start, pause and move through the script without touching the prompter: a phone used as a remote, a remote that ships with a rig, or an operator in an AV booth. In ScrollCue (Pro), you pair a phone by QR code (the phone scans the prompter, then the prompter scans the phone or hears its code as a short sound), then play, pause, change speed and jump between sections, or switch the phone to a presenter view that shows the same script in sync, with the prompter's camera or screen behind it (or send the phone's camera the other way); the two devices talk directly over the same Wi-Fi, so it works without internet once ScrollCue has been opened on both. [Remotes and control →](https://scrollcue.com/hardware#remotes-and-control)
- **Teleprompter with video recording**: A prompter that records your camera while you read, so the script and the take happen on one device. ScrollCue Pro records with the camera behind the script and saves to your device with no watermark. [Recording and YouTube →](https://scrollcue.com/setup#recording)
- **Chroma key output (OBS)**: A prompter view on a solid colour that OBS can key out, so the script floats over your camera feed on your own monitor without appearing in the stream. [Teleprompter in OBS →](https://scrollcue.com/setup#obs)
- **Presenter notes**: Reminders in the script that only the presenter sees. In ScrollCue, text in [[double brackets]] shows as a note and never appears in recordings or on audience screens. [Setup guides →](https://scrollcue.com/setup)
- **Script sections**: Headings in a script, written as ## in ScrollCue, that let you or an operator jump straight to a part of the talk. [Setup guides →](https://scrollcue.com/setup)
- **Red dim mode**: A low-glare display mode that shows the script in dim red so it does not light up the speaker's face or distract a dark room. [Church teleprompter setup →](https://scrollcue.com/blog/church-teleprompter-setup-guide)
- **Hood (shroud)**: The cloth or plastic cover around a glass teleprompter that blocks light from behind the camera, so the glass shows the script and not the room. [DIY teleprompter glass →](https://scrollcue.com/blog/diy-teleprompter-glass-guide)
- **Display mode (Elgato Prompter)**: A Camera Hub setting that makes the Elgato Prompter act as a second monitor, so any app, including ScrollCue in a browser, can show on it. [Hardware teleprompters →](https://scrollcue.com/hardware)
